AI in Travel: Enhancing, Not Replacing, Advisors
In today’s digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming industries—including travel. From chatbots that suggest itineraries to algorithms that find cheap flights, AI is more accessible than ever. It might seem like technology is making travel advisors obsolete, but the reality is quite the opposite.
While AI can be a helpful tool, it has critical limitations. Booking a trip isn’t just about finding the cheapest flight or a well-rated hotel—it’s about crafting an experience. And that’s where a travel advisor’s expertise makes all the difference.
The Limitations of AI in Travel Planning
1. AI Lacks Personalized Insight
AI can process vast amounts of data, but it doesn’t truly “know” you. It may suggest a top-rated resort based on reviews, but it won’t understand the nuances of your preferences, travel style, or past experiences. A travel advisor takes the time to learn what you value most—whether that’s a quiet adults-only escape, an action-packed family vacation, or a foodie-focused cruise.
2. AI Lacks Real-World Experience
Travel advisors don’t just read about destinations—we visit them. We sail on the cruises, stay in the resorts, and hear firsthand from other travelers. AI, on the other hand, is limited to the data it’s trained on. It can’t tell you which Caribbean resort has the best service or which cruise ship’s dining experience stands out unless it’s regurgitating reviews.
3. AI Can’t Handle Complex or Unexpected Situations
When travel plans go smoothly, booking online may seem convenient. But when things don’t go as planned, AI won’t be there to step in.
For example, I once had a client traveling to their cruise port when they saw on social media that boarding was delayed due to “extra cleaning.” Not wanting to rely on speculation, they contacted me. While social media posts trickled in with rumors, I reached out directly to the cruise line for official details and reassured my client with accurate information. AI can’t make that call. I can.
4. AI-Generated Travel Plans Are Often Generic
AI itinerary builders pull from existing recommendations, but they don’t customize trips in the way an experienced advisor does. They may recommend a “must-do” excursion that’s completely wrong for your interests. And for group travel, where different personalities, budgets, and logistics need to align, AI simply isn’t capable of tailoring a seamless experience.
How AI Can Be a Useful Travel Tool (When Used Correctly)
AI isn’t the enemy—it’s a tool. In fact, just as travelers may use AI for research, I use AI in my business as well. But I also know its strengths and weaknesses.
- AI is great for inspiration, brainstorming, and even generating ideas for travel content.
- It can assist with basic price comparisons and general research.
- However, its information must always be fact-checked—many AI models, like ChatGPT, are predictive text generators rather than live research tools.
When travelers rely too much on AI without a professional’s oversight, they risk outdated, incorrect, or misleading information. That’s why working with an advisor is the smarter choice.
Why Travel Advisors Are More Valuable Than Ever
- Exclusive Knowledge & Insider Perks – Advisors have access to upcoming sales, promotions, and client feedback that Google and AI simply don’t.
- Time-Saving & Stress-Free Planning – Instead of spending hours researching, you get expert recommendations tailored to your needs.
- A Real Person on Your Side – When travel disruptions happen, AI can’t advocate for you—but I can.
